Different Ways To Improve Your Sales Skills

Being a good salesperson is not just about having the “sales gene” or the talent. Being a good salesperson is about having concrete skills and knowledge of each customer to be able to give them the product that they need. This post will talk about some of the skills that are needed to be a successful salesperson and how to sharpen the skills you already have. 

Make a Connection

Possibly one of the most important factors of being a great salesperson is the ability to create a relationship with anyone you come in contact with. You want to be able to immediately establish trust and show that you have the customer’s best interest at heart. You do not always have to start the conversation by telling the customer that they need your product. Instead, try just sitting back and listening to what the customer needs. Once you have a connection and you know exactly what the customer is looking for, then you will have a much higher chance of your pitch being successful. Showing the customer that you care about what their needs are and you want to do your best to help them solve their problem will go a long way in the conversation.

Become a Great Public Speaker

You never want to come across as nervous during a sales call. A potential customer might take it as a sign that you are being deceitful or that you just are not exactly sure what you are doing. Having confidence when you speak is extremely important when it comes to making the first pitch to a new customer. Becoming a better public speaker is a skill that can be learned. Some simple ways to improve your speaking skills are to try making small talk to strangers, get involved in an organization that involves public speaking like improv or a debate team or even taking public speaking classes. With this skill, you will have the confidence to clearly state what you are trying to sell and why the customer needs it.

Take Time to Reflect

Not all of your sales calls will go over well. Even the best salespeople will have bad days or customers that are just going to be persuaded to buy your product. This is completely normal and it is bound to happen sooner or later. Use this sales call as an opportunity to learn what you can do better in the future. If you have a video or notes from the interview, take them out and go over your performance. There is always room for improvement and going over failed sales calls can be a great way to learn what to do better in the future. On the other hand, also take the time to look over your great calls. Learn what made them great and what you did to lock down the sale. Past experiences are our best teachers and you can only benefit from taking the time to reflect. 

The Learning is Never Over

Improving your sales skills is something that you should never stop doing. No one is perfect and there are so many different ways to be a great salesperson that you may not know about. Have conversations with your sales team and see what they do to make their sales calls successful. Reach out to someone with more experience than you and ask if they could mentor you and share some of their tips and tricks. Go to sales training conferences and see what the most up-to-date sales tactics are. There are endless ways to stay up to date with the changing sales world, you just have to be willing to learn. In the future, all of the time you have dedicated to improving your sales skills will reward you with higher closing rates, better relationships with your customer, and overall smoother sales calls.
