Software for Sales Managers

Employee Spotlight: Grant Bowman

by Adam Cuzzort

This week’s employee spotlight is on our Data Science intern, Grant Bowman. Grant joined the Canopy team in May and has been a great addition to both the software engineering team and the Canopy family.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

“I am currently working from home and I am from Waco, Texas. This Fall I will be a Senior at Purdue University and I am studying Computer Science and Mathematics. In high school, I took a computer science class where I made a four player game to share with my friends. From then on I knew that I really loved programming. I have also just always enjoyed and been good at math. In college I realized I could study both at the same time, so that is what I am doing.”

What project are you working on currently?

“I have been working on an NLG (Natural Language Generation) software process. I am using it to create templates that will intelligently extract important information from our data to create a summary email. The current summary emails that are sent out contain a lot of messy, fragmented information. My template will combine the information using NLG, so that the final summary email looks like it was written by a human.

The template is similar to a Mad Libs word game, but instead of nouns and verbs the slots are for important information from data. Currently, only one sentence is extracted from each data point. My goal is to make the template have the ability to decide what information is important and then to extract as much of it as needed for each email summary.”

What has been your favorite project you have worked on?

“Honestly, probably the NLG. It is difficult and takes a lot of time, but I have enjoyed getting the first-hand experience. I have definitely learned a lot throughout this process.”

What is the most important thing you have learned?

“I have learned how to use GitHub effectively. Before this internship, I had no idea how to use the site. I was pasting code in completely wrong places, it was a mess. Using GitHub is definitely an important thing to know how to use in the engineering world and now I feel confident using it in the future.”

What do you do in your free time?

“I enjoy playing and creating video games. I am actually currently in a group called RASA Studios. It is a group of people from all over the world and we create content for Minecraft. The latest thing we have done is create a gameshow in Minecraft, it was really fun. It started off just as a group of friends building in a video game, and it grew from there.”

How is Grant’s work impacting Canopy? From our CEO Pat Rodgers:

Grant’s work in NLG allows us to take the signals and insights being generated by our AI & ML models and simplify them into digestible sentences that anyone can understand. As my Co-Founder Adam Cuzzort always says, “we are democratizing data science”. Grant’s work on NLG allows us to take active data monitoring to the next level and provide any member of the revenue team with actions and next steps no matter the circumstance. It’s still a bit early but will be a major win for Canopy and our clients!

A huge thank you goes out to Grant for all the work he does for Canopy!
